The HISTORY CHANNEL - This one has a useful search engine for finding specific information, and the fine coverage of history includes much about music and musicians. I found "Scott Joplin" as easily as "Abraham Lincoln." (Reference category)
Biography.com - A site great for looking up anybody famous. Also great for musicians and artists, try "Beethoven" for example!"

Bartleby.com is "The preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing...unlimited access to books and information on the web, free of charge." A collection of great scholarly material for searching free! You gotta look at this one.
